Sergey P. Korolyov [Korolev]
(1907[1906 old style]-1966)

The most famous Soviet rocket designer and pioneer of cosmonautics, known for years only under the code word of "Chief Constructor". He was the main author of the USSR successes with the first artificial satellite of the Earth  Sputnik-1, and the first man in space Yuri Gagarin. He was born to a teacher's family in Zhitomir, Ukraine .

Named after Korolyov were:

• a very large crater (437 km diameter) on the far side of the Moon ,
• a large crater (84 km diameter) on Mars ,
• an asteroid 1855 Korolev.
